Bellydance Workshops

By the title of this post, you'd think I'm about to share with you all kinds of bellydance workshops that are about to happen. It's just the opposite. With the trend that is happening these days, I'm about to share with you all the bellydance workshops that are about to NOT happen. Why? Because enrollment is low.

For those of you that know me personally, I'm a quiet person. I don't typically speak out of turn. I'm also not one to impose my personal opinions on other people because I believe everyone is different and is entitled to his/her own opinions. We just need to agree to disagree!

But seriously. For a while, bellydance workshops were selling out. You had to book early in advance to get in. These days, at least in the South, it appears that dancers are not signing up for workshops. Sponsors are canceling workshops or diminishing the events down to just a few hours of instruction. It seems like if there isn't a competition as part of the event, then there's no incentive to attend.

I know times are tough, but why is this happening? Soon enough, there will be a lack of workshops. We will be hurting for so-and-so to come out to teach. You may have the best bellydance teacher in the world, but recognize that there are so many fabulous teachers out there. Bellydance isn't just about learning a move, a combo, or a choreography, it's also about community. Just because you don't know such-and-such teacher, doesn't mean that you won't learn anything. Just because you don't dance the same style as or aren't interested in that style of bellydance doesn't mean you shouldn't go.

A few years ago, I was living in New Zealand. I was teaching. I was performing. Someone was hosting a weekend of workshops with this lady that I had never heard of. I looked at her website. I looked at Youtube and saw her video clips. I was wavering back and forth about going. Finally, I bit the bullet and signed up for the Sunday workshops. Boy was I glad I did. Her name was Orit Maftsir. She's from Israel. I could understand her because she spoke perfect English. She was fabulous. She was juicy. She was sassy. She was inspirational. I walked away from the Sunday workshops regretting that I didn't sign up for the Saturday ones. Don't be like me. Sign up for workshops.

Don't limit yourself. Broaden your horizons. Get inspired!

Of course, I would be much more help if I had a listing of all workshops coming up in 2011... but I do not. Just a few off the top of my head:

  • April :: Tribal Dance Camp 2011 featuring Kajira Djoumahna of BlackSheep BellyDance, Bahaia, and Michelle Manx
  • June :: Austin Bellydance Convention 2011 featuring Suhaila Salimpour and guest instructors
  • October :: Tribal Alchemy

Start saving your Christmas money for these awesome events!
    I know I am!

Tribal Fusion Bellydance Fall Class 7

Thank you, Ladies for a fantastic last class of the year! What we did for this last class was cleaned up the movements. There is always some level of refinement that can be done. It's especially important for dancers who've progressed beyond beginner classes to start address them. Some times, it's just our memory that keeps us from dancing full-out, but that's what repetition is for. Thank you for your efforts!

I'm going to miss seeing on my students on Wednesday and Thursday nights, but I hope to use that time to "recharge" my batteries and work on some new class plans for 2011.

I hope you'll use your free Wednesday/Thursday nights for something run, relaxing, or productive!

In case you were wondering, this piece to Dilges was inspired by the dances of the Indigo (group choreos with Rachel, Mardi, and Zoe):

And here is perhaps a little inspiration for next time...

    Bellydance Basics Class 7

Thanks everyone for a fantastic last class of the year! I'm really honored to have been able to share this dance with you. Hopefully you've been inspired enough to keep dancing. Whether it's with me or someone else, just keep dancing!

In this last class, we covered undulation and choo choo shimmy.

An undulation can be broken down into 4 parts:
    - upper back contraction
    - upper ab contraction
    - lower ab contraction
    - release
Note that a typical undulation will start in the upper back, but really, you can start at any part of this 4-part movement. Crazy isn't it?! For the purpose of our choreography, however, we will work on the typical "up to down undulation" which starts in the upper back.

A choo choo shimmy is defined:
Fast hip singles on the balls of the feet. Meaning, right ball of the foot steps and the right hip is up; left ball of the foot steps and the left hip is up. The faster you go, the more important it is to stay centered. Make sure your hips stay right under your ribcage.

Here are the new sections to this drum solo piece:

    3:08 Undulations up to down
    - facing left diagonal
    - facing right diagonal
    - facing left diagonal
    - facing right diagonal

    3:17 Locks Combo:
    Shoulders RLRLRLRL
    Chest UDUDUDUD
    Hips RLRLRLRL
    Pelvic FBFBFBFB
Alternatively, you can vary the four body parts. Here is an example:
    Chest squares 2x
    Hip squares 2x

3:25 Choo Choo Shimmy in place for 16 counts

Finale Choo Choo Shimmy for 8 counts turning around yourself.
    Pose!

I hope you had fun ladies. It's amazing what your body can do when you train it!

Keep an eye out on this blog for the announcement of the January classes.
Enjoy the rest of the year and hope to see you joyful as ever in January!

    With lots of shimmies,

    Topics for January 2011

I know you're wondering what's next? With this week being our last week together, we'll have a two month break until we see each other next. So I wanted to give you a heads up on the topics that we'll be covering starting mid January:

    Bellydance Basics
In January 2011, we will start off the year with some good drilling of the foundation movements with focus on improvisation. My goal for this class is cardio, so we will be continuously moving!

    Tribal Fusion Bellydance
I have said this before, and I'll say it again: "It's good to know your roots." I've also said: "In order to move forward, some times it's good to look back." This past year, I've grown to love finger cymbal playing. My most recent inspiration is the Jamila Salimpour bellydance format, which is essentially the roots of tribal bellydance in America. Coincidentally, the Jamila format also includes a heavy dose of finger cymbal patterns which we will use. Get ready to get "old school" with your finger cymbals.

I will have pairs of Saroyan finger cymbals (zills) for sale and for borrowing in class. If you would like to purchase them from a website, please let me know first before purchasing. Quality varies between makers!

You can learn about Jamila Salimpour from these two articles:

Tribal Fusion Bellydance Fall Class 6

The second half of the "Dilges" choreography is essentially the same as the first half with a few exceptions:

    2:51 Figure 8 Walk and 5-Count Combo
3:13 Combo A (but left side)
3:49 Combo C - Figure 8 Up to Down (RL). Right hip hook. Walking with interior hip circles (Hip downbeat front clockwise sixteenthnotes/fulltime; feet downbeat R quarternotes/halftime. Essentialy, one full circle per step)

Everthing else is the same. Have fun praticing and see you Thursday!

    Bellydance Basics Class 6 Notes

Our second to last class of the year!!! Thanks for spending your time with me!

Here are some new basic movements:
    1. Figure 8's down to up (a.k.a. "maya") - This is the reverse of the previous figure 8 that we've done. So, the hip starts up, slides out, drops down, then pulls in back to center. Do this on both sides continuously for that "infinity sign".
    2. Forward and back step with hip singles - this is also known as the "basic step".
    3. 3-step turn - Add your arms where they are open to the sides on 1, then close on 2, then open again on 3.

Here's the new steps we added to the choreography:
  • Figure 8 UD RL
    Twists RLR (cts 5+6)
    ¼ pivot turn (cts 78)
    Repeat this 4 times.

  • Arms at 5th (straight up over head)
    Right Hip FBFB (cts 1-4)
Turn over right shoulder (cts 5-8)
    Left Hip FBFB (cts 1-4)
Turn over left shoulder (cts 5-8)
    Repeat R, L again.

I'll have the DVD's at the next week's class. Hope to see you soon!

    Bellydance Basics Class 5 Notes

In this fifth class of the 7-week series, we worked on speed! So, we increased the speed of our hip squares (or broken interior hip circles), interior hip circles, and timed the hip singles.

    Here's the overview:
    1. Hip squares - fast 8th notes.
    2. Interior hip circles (omi) - faster 16th notes to where you hit front on every beat.
    3. Hip twist into hip half circles.
    4. 3/4 shimmy.

The toughest is that 3/4 shimmy. There are a couple of ways to think about it.
    - Step right foot with hips RLR (hold), then step left foot wit hips LRL (hold); repeat
    - Step right foot with 2 hip ups on the right, then step left foot with 2 hip ups on the left; repeat
    - emphasize the first hip up as you step on that foot.

Start slow, then speed it up so where you are walking "normally" and the hips float on top.

    Happy practicing!

Tribal Fusion Bellydance Fall Class 4

We reviewed the choreography to Dilges and clarified a few sections. Here are a few:
    1. In the Paddle Turn, step the right foot out to about 1 o'clock, but keep your weight centered. So, not leaning onto your right foot. Your body/hips should be facing stage left. The right foot acts like an oar that you're using to paddle yourself around to the back. That's count 1. As you use your right foot to rotate your body around, pivot on the ball of the left foot. Leave that left foot on the ground the entire time.

Step the right foot, toes facing upstage (back), in close to the left foot on count 2. At this point, your body should be somewhat facing stage right.

You start over again with the right foot stepping out to the 1 o'clock, body turns to stage left... etc.

You also use your right arm in the turn. Start with both arms bent, elbows up. Extend the right arm out as you step right foot out to 1 o'clock. Pull the hand in (back to arm bent), keep the elbow up. So the action of the right arm is extending out and pulling in of the forearm. Your upper body may lean forward as you step out, but come back to upright when you pull in.

    2. For the Tunisian Box, remember that you are on the balls of the feet the entire time.

    Hope that helps!

Alright, on to the new stuff:
    1. Hip Singles with chest squares. This is the fun one!
The hip singles are eighth notes. Right hip on count 1, left hip on count 2.
The broken interior chest circles (or chest squares for short) are quarter notes. Chest lift on count 1, right on count 2, down/neutral on count 3, left on count 4. You can think of it even simpler like this: For every side of the chest, you're doing a hip right and left. Easy! Remember, practice makes permanent.

    2. Walking Combo:
Think of a short and wide letter M or think of an infinity sign where the bottom half has been chopped off. So the movement is basically an up to down figure 8 (up and over-out), but you stop the down half way. Another way to think about it is if you have hammers attached to the sides of your hips and you have to hammer a little nail down: you'd bring your hip up, then tap it down gently. Yeah, like that!
Feet and hips are quarter notes for 8 counts. Arms up at 5th position.

Then right foot steps back, cross behind left. Right arm up, torso facing stage right, left arm parallel to floor extends towards stage right for counts 1 and 2.
Following that the right foot steps back to center, left foot in place, then right foot in place for counts 3 and 4.
Then repeat with the left foot steps back, cross behind right. Left arm up, torso facing stage left, right arm parallel to floor extends towards stage left for counts 5 and 6.
Half turn over the right shoulder for counts 7 and 8. Use your right arm to swing you around.

    With the music, it is:
2:10 - Hip Singles with chest squares
    2 times clockwise
    2 times counter clockwise

2:19 - Hip slides with arms
Hip slide right - 4 counts
Hip slide left - 4 counts
Hands/arms push with the hip slides

    2:25 - shoulder shimmies
Yes, we get a break here! A little fun attitude here please!

    2:32
    - SAME as previous section: Interior hip circles, hip drop, and cross turn Combo

    2:51 - Walking Combo
Two times. First time will bring you to face back. Second time will be moving up stage (to the back) and will bring you to face front.

Hope to get a little video out to you soon!

    Bellydance Basics Class 4 Notes

The focus of this fourth class is shimmies.

Shimmies: fast and timely alternating hip singles up. That being said, remember that the hips are going straight up. Start slow with one hip up, then alternating. Double the speed. Then speed up as fast as you can go. Remember to keep knees slightly bent and pelvis neutral.

Practice at home with the different "options" we talked about in class. Experiement a little and find a shimmy that works for you. We all have to start somewhere! Options:
    - knees bent, shimmies powered by the hips
    - knees soft, shimmies powered by the legs
    - knees soft, shimmies powered by the inner thighs
    - knees soft, shimmies powered by a combination of hips and legs
    - bring your weight forward to the balls of the feet
    - bring your weight back to the heels of the feet

    We also covered:
    1. Omis (interior hip circles) FLBR
    2. Hip shimmies with hip slides
    3. Hip shimmies with shoulder presses and chest lifts

Remember you can practice your shimmies anywhere! Let's set a goal for full voluptuous shimmies. We can easily tone them down later.

    Enjoy!

    Bellydance Basics: Class 5 Notes

Big thanks to those who could make it to our last class of the series. We finished this 5-week series with the quintessential bellydance movement: undulations! I've always loved undulations. However, it is quite a complicated movement and could take a while to get. So be patient with yourself.

Undulations could be broken down to these steps:
    - contraction in the upper back
    - contraction in the upper abs
    - contraction in the mid abs
    - contraction in the low abs
Be sure to release before you start over again. As a matter of fact, release the muscle prior the one you are contracting and flow from one to the next in a consistent smooth pace.

As for the "Mandatory Dance Party", well... it was really a review of all that we've done these 5 weeks.

Thank you for dancing with me. I really enjoyed it, and I hope you did too!

The next session starts next Wednesday at Flamencura Dance Studio. We'll be working towards a dance for 7 weeks.
    See you there!

TFBD: September series: Class 5 notes

Ok Folks! Here is the last bit of the choreo to Special Kae:

    2:02 Corn on the Cob
    2:15 Shimmy Locks combo:(Ayoub rhythm)

    - Head slide right, center
    - Chest lock up, down
    - Shoulder lock right front (left back), right back (left front)
    *Omi ¼ turn.

    - Head slide left, center
    - Chest lock up, down
    - Shoulder lock left front (right back), left back (right front)
    *Cross turn.

    - Head slide right, center
    - Chest lock up, down
    - Shoulder lock right front (left back), right back (left front)
    *Shoulder shimmy.

    - Head slide left, center
    - Chest lock up, down
    - Shoulder lock left front (right back), left back (right front)
    *Singles.

    2:38 Gawazi shimmy (Malfouf rhythm)
    - Right arm draws down and to shoulder height, left arm up – 4 counts.
    - Turn over left shoulder – 4 counts.

FINALE Begin by facing right corner
    - Shoulder roll forward, undulate up to down, Left hip drop. Singles.
    - Left cross turn. Arms up – Pose.

As I was saying in class, this piece is HARD! It's super technical and somewhat appropriate because this song is really a drum solo. Perfect time to exhibit your skills. Keep in mind though, we still kept it cool. There was at least one "resting" section. Can you guess which one?

I hope to put together a little video clip for this along with a full break down of the choreo.

The next Tribal Fusion series starts next THURSDAY at Cafe Dance, 7:45pm. We'll be working on a fun and upbeat dance, inspired by Mardi Love and Rachel Brice. Hope to see you there!!!

    Bellydance Basics: Class 4 Notes

Shoulder shimmies, snake arms, and some fun combos!

Giving a little more focus to our upper bodies today, we touched upon shoulder shimmies and snake arms. I noticed some of you were "feeling the burn" in the middle of class as we practiced the snake arms. Note that "snake arms" are also called "arm waves".

Shoulder shimmies - the shoulders move in opposite directions forward and back. Keep the movement small. The shoulder should remain pressed down, moving forward and back. Lifting the shoulders would be a different movement!

We walked with the shoulder shimmy. We also used it as a transition between the hip drops on the left and right sides.

Snake arms / Arm waves - There are four parts to an arm wave: shoulder, elbow, wrist, finger tips. If we are starting on our right arms, the parts of the arm lift upward while the same part on the left arm presses downward. Again, it's this concept of opposition! Remember that when lifting the arm up, lead with the top of the wrist, but when lowering the arm, lead with the inside of the wrist. Practice just alternating the wrists in both left and right. Meaning, right wrist up (fingers down) and left wrist down (fingers up); then right wrist down (fingers up) and left wrist up (fingers down). What we find is that we can do each of these items just fine on its own, but when we put them together is where we have troubles. Practice each segment of the arm wave in opposites.

We walked across the room with the arm waves. We also used the foot pattern "cross touch" with the arm waves.

Figure 8 Arms - Paired with the horizontal figure 8 hip from front to back, we copied this shape with arms by drawing the figure 8 horizontally in front of us as if we were drawing it on the floor.

Then we put together a quick combination across the floor:
    - Figure 8 Arms with horizontal figure 8 hips (8 counts)
    - Full hip circle (4 counts)
    - Arm waves while walking [optional cross touch feet] (4 counts)

Finally, we brought back two movements we learned in the previous classes:
    Hip circle and Hip twists

Exaggerating the hip circle by stepping the right foot out to the right to initiate the movement, twists on the right hip as your shoulders remain over the left hip and your gaze is on your right hip. Round the hips back for a half circle over to the left side, so that now your shoulders are over the right hip and your gaze is on your left hip. Hip twists on the left. Round the hips front for a half circle. Pull the left foot in to meet the right to finish.

What fun and sassy ladies you are!
    Thanks for a great class!

Remember that next week is our last class of the series. We will cover some new material and review all of which we have learned the past few weeks. We'll finish with a "Mandatory Dance Party!"

Lastly, registration for the next series is open. Bellydance Basics Classes will be held at

Video of Lily dancing to "Leilet Hob"

Here is the video clip of me dancig to the song "Leilet Hob". Music by Atash.

It's a long one... My favorite part is towards the end after the exciting drums. One of the spectators told me how amazing it was for me to be dancing for that long, to live music and improvised. It does help, however, to know the song "Leilet Hob". Everyone should know it! But you just don't know how Atash will play it. Every time they play it live, it's just a little different. I like it because it keeps me on my toes! Thank you, Atash, for a great night. Thanks, Carol, for the video!

    Thanks for watching!

TFBD: September series: Class 4 notes

After a quick warmup, we went right to business! We covered 3 combinations today:

    1. The "Diamond" Combo
    - right hip up
    - chest lock up
    - left hip up
    - chest lock down
    (repeat in a continuous cycle)
For the choreography, we mimic the accents in the music with the four points of this "Diamond" combo.

    2. The "Retreat" Combo
    - swing left arm from down to back and up while stepping the left foot back.
    - with the right hip in front, drop right hip down big/small/small, big/small/small.
(repeat on right side, then left, then right)

    3. "Pushed Four Corners" Combo
    - walking to the left diagonal, end with weight on left foot, body angled slightly forward. Quarter-note feet. 4 counts.
    - pushed chest circle starting left, accenting on the first count with a shoulder shimmy. 4 counts.
    - pushed chest circle starting right, accenting on the first count with a shoulder shimmy. 4 counts.
    - hip singles starting left (right down). Lock them in place to mimic the hard dums of the music. Eighth-note hips. 4 counts.
(repeat walking to right front corner, back left corner, then back right corner)

Fun stuff! Of course, we reviewed the choreography and was able to run it from beginning to end. Good work everyone!

Next week, we're going to finish this. 'Til then, practice!

Sahara Nights and Dancing with Atash

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
For making this past Saturday such a wonderful night of dancing. I forgot to mention that I won't be at the October Sahara Nights, so hope I danced enough for ya! It's a special and rare opportunity for me to have two shows in one night, and I appreciate all the friends who came out to support. It's always comforting to know you've got friends out there in the audience.

This was my first time dancing to the entire song of Leilet Hob with Atash. For those who know Atash, their songs are LONG when they play live. This was almost an endurance test for me!

    Much love,

    Bellydance Basics: Class 3 Notes

In class 3, we covered horizontal figure 8's. There are so many options, let's see if we can vocalize them here.

    Standing in place:
    1. Back to front figure 8's, starting on the right.
    2. Back to front figure 8's, starting on the left.
    3. Front to back figure 8's, starting on the right.
    4. Front to back figure 8's, starting on the left.

Of course, now, we can also walk with them. Take the 4 above and add feet:
    1. starting on the right foot.
    2. starting on the left foot.

    Then in releve, walk!

Practice with both feet flat first, in place. Once you get comfortable, take one foot off of the floor and continue with your figure 8. Then change feet.

Then go back to your starting foot and continue with the next figure 8 listed. Then change feet.

... and on and on and on... I hope you found this as challenging as it was fun!

In class, we explored the figure 8's standing in place and walking forward and back. We also played with timing. So, the first figure 8 is slow, then two fast ones. Believe it or not, we could have gone even faster!

We also explored transitioning from a back to front figure 8 to a front to back figure 8 using a half circle. So, the chain of commands would go:

    1. Start right hip back, round right hip to front, slide back left, round left hip to front.
    2. With that left hip pushed front, even out the hips to slide the hips forward and round over to the right for a half circle.
    3. With the hips already at the top of the right side, continue to round out to the back, pull in through center, so now the left hip slides front. Round out the left hip out and to the back.
    4. With the left hip back, even out the hips to slide the hips back and round over the right side for a half circle.

So essentially the shape we're making is:
    - back to front figure 8 starting right.
    - half circle front starting left.
    - front to back figure 8 starting right.
    - half circle back staring left.

Fun! Fun! Fun! Tough! Tough! Tough!
Thanks for bringing your thinking caps.
    See you next week!

TFBD: September series: Class 3 notes

So we had some fun combos today. I have to admit, this piece is hard. With the human beat-box and funky beats, I'm so wanting to just play, but no, we have work to do!

    Corn on the Cob Combo:

    Pelvic lock front (count 1)
    Hip Slide R (count 2)
Pelvic lock back/front (8th notes) and slide L back to center

    Chest lock down (count 1)
    Chest slide R (count 2)
Chest lock up/down (8th notes) and slide L back to center

    Pelvic lock front (count 1)
    Hip Slide L (count 2)
Pelvic lock back/front (8th notes) and slide R back to center (counts 3-8)

    Chest lock down (count 1)
    Chest slide L (count 2)
    Pause (counts 3,4)
Chest square (8th notes) and slide R back to center starting on counts (5-8)

    Water Tower Combo:

Start in Diagonal sit pose (standing back leg is left, right foot front in releve)

Undulate down (count 1), R hip drop (count 2)
Hip Singles (8th notes) with chest circle R to L(counts 3-8)

Undulate down (count 1), L hip drop (count 2)
Hip Singles (8th notes) with chest circle L to R(counts 3-8)

Undulate down (count 1), R hip drop (count 2)
Hip Singles (8th notes) with chest circle R to L(counts 3-8)

    Undulate down (count 1), R hip drop L to R(count 2)
    Undulate up (counts 5-8)

What can I say, I'm a visual person. Hope these imageries help!
See you at Sahara Nights this Saturday!

    Bellydance Basics: Class 2 Notes

In this second class, we covered "Hip twists"! Keeping your torso facing forward, knees soft, twist the right hip forward (left hip back), then reverse it so that left hip is forward (right hip back).

What we find is that standing in place, you can repeat this movement and it's just a continuous motion. We also started to talk about the downbeat or where you movement starts with the beat of the music. We can start with the right hip forward or with the left hip forward. When standing, this looks pretty much the same. It is much more obivous when you start to walk with this hip movement or when you have one heel up.

    Hip Twists with:
    - Right heel up. Twist right hip forward on the downbeat. The motion on the right hip is "up, up, up..."
    - Right heel up. Twist left hip forward on the downbeat. The motion on the right hip is "down, down, down..."
    - Left heel up. Twist left hip forward on the downbeat. The motion on the left hip is "up, up, up..."
    - Left heel up. Twist right hip forward on the downbeat. The mtion on the left hip is "down, down, down..."

We also traveled with the hip twist with the Step Touch:
    - Step right, then touch with ball of the left foot and twist the left hip forward at the same time.
    - Step left, then touch the floor with the ball of the right foot and twist the right hip forward at the same time.
    - continue.

    Hope you had fun!
    See you Thursday,

TFBD: September series: Class 2 notes

We worked A LOT on our lower abs today. It's tough because it's one of those neglected muscles. To have control over this muscle will do wonders for your pelvic locks. We didn't even get to exploring the different degrees of contraction. Another time!

In addition to drilling the lower abdominal contractions for a front pelvic lock, we also used this contraction to initiate our "Down to Up" undulations (or what some people call "reverse undulation").

We added a new combination "Roll Up Combo":
Right shoulder roll forward and Right hip forward drop (count 1)
Right shoulder roll back and Right hip back drop (count 2)
    Undulation up (counts 3-8)

Left shoulder roll forward and Left hip forward drop (count 1)
Left shoulder roll back and Left hip back drop (count 2)
    Undulation up (counts 3-8)

    And now, with shimmy!
Hip roll up Combo with shimmy (on the undulation down to up):

Right shoulder roll forward and Right hip forward drop (count 1) – to left diagonal
Right shoulder roll back and Right hip back drop (count 2)
Undulation up (counts 3-8) with shimmy

R shoulder roll forward and Right hip forward drop (count 1) – to left diagonal
R shoulder roll back and Right hip back drop (count 2)
Undulation up (counts 3-6) with shimmy
Chest Lock up down up (count 7,+, 8)

Left shoulder roll forward and Left hip forward drop (count 1) – to right diagonal
Left shoulder roll back and Left hip back drop (count 2)
Undulation up (counts 3-8) with shimmy

Left shoulder roll forward and Left hip forward drop (count 1) – to right diagonal
Left shoulder roll back and Left hip back drop (count 2)
Undulation up (counts 3-6) with shimmy
Chest Lock up down up (count 7,+, 8)

Practice this! We'll put all of the combos together in Class 3.
    See you soon!

    Bellydance Basics: Class 1 Notes

It was so nice to meet everyone on Thursday night. For most, this was the first bellydance class. For a couple of you, this was a good introduction to how we'll work together and a good review of some basic belly dance movements.

What we covered in this first class:
    1. POSTURE!
    2. Hip singles (a.k.a. hip ups or hip lifts)
    3. Hip circles
    4. Hip half circles
    5. Step Touch foot pattern

We put a few of these movements together:
    1. Walking with the hip singles. The hip that lifts is the same side as the foot that steps onto the ground.
    2. Walking with hip doubles. Two hip lifts on the same side as the foot that steps on the ground.
    3. Step touch with hip singles. The hip lifts on the side of the foot with the heel up (the "touch"). We vary the arms over head or alternating one hand behind head and the other reaching forward.
    4. Step touch with Hip half circles. Step right foot, start hip half circle from left (slide left) and round to right. Stop the hip half circle on the right hip and touch the left foot. Alternate: step the left foot, start the hip half circle on the right hip (slide right) and round to the left. Stop the hip half cirlce on the left hip and touch the right foot. Just think opposite hip to opposite foot.

Hope you had fun! See you next Thursday at Cafe Dance!

TFBD: September series: Class 1 notes

    Hi Ladies,

Thanks for a great first class. I hope you had as much fun drilling and dancing as I did!

Some basic concepts to keep in mind when we drill with layers:
    1. Speed - If you are having a difficult time keeping up with the tempo we're going, you always have the option of slowing it down. Cut the speed in half and go slow. Once you get comfortable at that speed, try going full speed once, go back to the slow speed. Then try going full speed twice, go back to slow speed. Three times at full speed, etc. etc. When you get to a stopping point, say, four continuous times at full speed, then you lose it. Alternate four times full speed, four times slow speed. Gradually build up.
    2. Foundation - When layering two movements together, often we have difficulties with one of the two. Perhaps you feel you can't do the movements together. Determine which one of the two movements you are having difficulties with. Let's say you are attempting to do a hip circle with shimmy. Do you lose the shimmy at some point during the hip circle? If so, go back to the shimmy. Start with the shimmy, work on free movement of the hips while shimmying. Then put your shimmy on auto-pilot. Focus then, on your hip circle. Maybe start with a smaller hip circle, then gradually increase the size of your hip circle. Determine where in the circle you're having a difficult time with your shimmy. Focus on that part of the circle with the shimmy.

We can all just "do the move" or attempt to do the move... and hope one day it'll click. But if we actively diagnose our own problems, then we can better are own dancing and technique. Sometimes, however, it helps to have the assistance or coaching of a teacher!

Prior to drilling, take each layer and reviewed them, then begin to add another movement.

Here are the combinations we ended up with at the end of the class:
    1. Chest circle with shoulder shimmy. Starting down, alternating directions.
    2. Shoulder roll down combo:
    - Right shoulder roll (back, up, forward, down), chest lock up [Count 1]
    - Chest lock down [Count 2]
    - Undulation from upper back down, finish at release [Counts 3-8]
    ... then left side
    3. Shoulder roll down combo with shimmy:
    - Right shoulder roll (back, up, forward, down), chest lock up [Count 1]
    - Chest lock down [Count 2]
    - Undulation with shimmy from upper back down, finish at release [Counts 3-8]
    ... then left side

All that with the music "Special Kae". Time: 0:00-0:26

Thanks for a great start of the series!

    TFBD Jul/Aug 2010 Series: Class 5 Notes

Big apologies! First, these notes are late. Second, I said in class that we have 2 more classes left. But I am mistaken. We have 3 more classes left. Whew! So, I'm even more confident we'll finish the choreography with flying colors.

So how are you enjoying the series so far? It's SLOW, isn't it? I hope you take advantage of the slowness of the movements and really feel the movement. It's tough enough to do a movement slowly, but when the tempo of the music is slow too... you have to put in your own personality and energy. If you want to talk muscles, then yes, we're using our muscles. We can imagine yourself driving a car. We don't always press the gas pedal all the way in and fully off. No one drives like that, or at least they shouldn't! We press the gas pedal gently, maybe even tap it, and sometimes it is a little more pressed down so that we can go a little faster. Regardless though, in order to move or go anywhere, you have to sustain. That gas pedal must be pressed. So, with dancing and using muscles, we do just that. We gauge how much to contract or "press" at a time. Sometimes we want to use a little more muscle. Sometimes we use just enough to sustain the movement.

Here's a recap of the new dance combos we covered in class:

    Music for class

    Hello Dancers!

Hope you're getting excited about our class tomorrow. For those that want to have the song we'll be working on, you can purchase it on iTunes.

The song is called "Bosphorus" on the album "New Dream" by the Turkish composer Burhan Ocal.
    On iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-dream/id79260617
    On Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bogazi%C3%A7i-Bosporus/dp/B000QNXLJ8/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1279301359&sr=1-21

A little about the "Bosphorus"... it is the narrow body of water which separates the European from the Asian part of Istanbul. For me, it's part of what gives Turkey a Mediterranean feel. Here are a few links to info and pics of the Bosphorus.

I hope you like it... I'm in love with this song!

    TFBD Jul/Aug 2010 Series: Class 1 Notes

    Hello Dancers!

Thank you for attending the first class of this 8-week summer session. We're fortunate to have had the lovely Yasmin substituting the first class. Thanks, also, to those who emailed your class notes in!

To summarize the brief history and styles talk, here it is in my words:

The origin of belly dance and what country it came from is highly disputed. Belly dance can be traced back to the Middle East and the Mediterranean. One theory is belly dance rose from childbirth rituals, however, there is no significant evidence. Inversely, childbirth rituals could have risen from belly dance. The dance style and music vary from country to country. Different terms are used for referring to the dance. For example, the Turkish use the term "Dans Oryantal" meaning "Oriental Dance", while the Egyptians use the term "Raks Sharqi" meaning "Eastern Dance". "Belly dance" is a term Westerners have coined and is somewhat a misnomer since the hips are predominately used. Just as there are different names for belly dance, the terminology for the movements are not universal. The shapes and movements, however, are essentially the same.

At its root, belly dance can be considered a folk dance that has evolved with time and people. In the Middle East, belly dance can be found as a social dance at female gatherings, belly dancers perform with live bands in restaurants and night clubs, and belly dancers are hired as part of a wedding celebration. While Belly dance is generally enjoyed by the people of the Near and Middle East it is not a respected profession because of the conservative ideals that women be chaste and modest. Of which dancing in public for a mixed gender audience as a profession is neither.

Belly dance was "introduced" to the US in the late 1800's, but it was not replicated in its respectable authentic form until the 1950's when numerous ethnic nightclubs owned and operated by people of the Middle East opened in large American cities like Chicago and New York. The majority of the dancers in these nightclubs were first generation immigrants, and much of the American belly dance legends learned from them. Because these nightclubs had to appeal to patrons from different countries of the Middle East, the dancers had to be proficient in different dance styles. The mixing of different Middle Eastern genres into one performance born the "American Cabaret" style.

The dance has evolved and continues to evolve, in the Middle Eastern countries and especially in the US. In the 1980's, American Tribal Style belly dance was born in the West Coast by Carolena Nericcio, director of Fat Chance Belly Dance. The American Tribal Style (ATS) blends belly dance, folkloric, Indian, and Flamenco dances... like how America is considered a "melting pot" of cultures. ATS is danced as a group improvisation. There are movement cues which indicate which movement to dance next. There are several other formats which stem from this concept.

When Jill Parker left Fat Chance Belly Dance and formed Ultra Gypsy Dance Theatre, she began to change the costuming, music, and rules of ATS so that the dances were choreographed and well suited for a soloist. Another pioneer of Tribal Fusion style, Heather Stants of Urban Tribal Dance Company began to incorporate modern dance elements as well as hip hop and other street dance styles. Tribal Fusion style was later popularized by Rachel Brice and her dance company, the Indigo.

I hope this helps in giving you some idea of how we are where we are today in the belly dance world. I do want to emphasize that in order to progress, you need to know where this dance came from and you need to have a solid dance foundation if you want to be a mover and shaker (no pun intended!).

Remember that everyone learns differently, and different teachers teach differently.
My intention for my classes is to share with you the possibilities of belly dance. As the overview above indicates, there are so many aspects to this dance with so many flavors. I believe there is something for everyone. But in order to find what speaks to us, we need to explore.

Here is a quick recap of the first class:

Warmup – stretch, plank pose, quadricep squats, push ups
    a. Muscle Identification
    i. Glutes – sit in straddle on ground and use glutes to raise and lower yourself

    TFBD May-June 2010 Series: Class 5 Notes

Class 5 was full of shimmies!

As we had talked about in class, there are different types of shimmies... then there is your default shimmy. Do a little exploration with changing your stance, feet wider or closer, weight distributed forward, center, or back, etc. Does the movement come from your hips or your legs? If legs, what part of the leg: knee or quadricep? Perhaps the movement can come from both hips and legs? Give it a try! Then vary the intensity... loose the swingy, soft and little, then big and strong!

For practice, start with dance posture and put the shimmies on "auto-pilot". Then add hip slides and other movements.

What we added to the choreography:

  • Shimmy with hip slides. 16 counts.

    • Shimmy with hip slide right (count 1), left (count 2), right (count 3), left (count 4), right (count 5), left (count 6); interior hip circle (counts 7,8). Repeat.

  • 3/4 shimmy, walking. 32 counts.

    • Place right foot at right diagonal, step left foot in place, right foot at left diagonal, step left foot in place, right foot at back left diagonal, step left foot in place, step right foot at back right diagonal, step left foot in place.
    • Walk forward for 8 counts.
    • Walk backwards for 4 counts.
    • Face the right diagonal using the last 4 counts.

  • Shimmy with undulations. 16 counts.

    • On the "and", start with shoulder roll forward so that on count 1, the shoulders draw back while the chest lifts up to start the undulations.
    • Start the next undulations on counts 3, 5, 7.
    • Pivot to the left diagonal to start again, from the shoulder roll.

Spaces are still available for the next series, starting July 8. Registration is available here: http://www.lilybellydance.com/instruction/index.shtml

The next series will focus on slow, flowy, ooey-gooey movements... Let's go serpentine!

    TFBD May-June 2010 Series: Class 4 Notes

Have you noticed the different rhythms so far?
In the first class, we covered Malfuf rhythm which has two beats to the bar with Dum on the 1 and 2. This is a fast rhythm, with a cyclical feeling, often used by belly dancers to make an entry or exit. The basic structure: Dum, tak-tak, dum, tak-tak

In the second class, we covered Fallahi rhythm which is also a two beat rhythm with the Dum on the 1 and 2. The word "Fallahi" means anything that is done by "Fallahine" who are the Egyptian farmers. The farmers use this rhythm in their songs of celebration. It has two beats to the bar. The basic structure is: Dum-tak-tak, dum-tak

In the third class, we introduced the Saaidi rhythm which has four beats to the bar with the Dum on the 1, (+) of 2, and 3. The Saaidi rhythm comes from El Saaid which is in upper Egypt. It is traditionally used in the martial arts, fighting dance with a stick called the 'Tahteeb' and in the Arabian horse dance. So, from these two descriptions, you can see how this rhythm has a gallant and earthy feel. The basic structure is: Dum-tak, dum-dum tak

This week, we cover the Ayoub rhythm which has two beats to the bar with the Dum on the 1 and 2. It is also known as the "Zaar", which is in reference to the Zaar dance which is a dance to drive away evil spirits or what we would call a "trance dance". The rhythm can sound a little "spooky". The basic structure is: Dum, ,tak-dum, tak

As you can hear from the music we're using, there is the base rhythm and then there are the decoration (extra taks, etc.) which help create a more intricate sound.

Moving forward on the Choreography to "Kholkhal Taheyya"...

    Movements
    1. Interior hip circle
    2. Chest circle
    3. Double time hip singles on the ball

    TFBD May-June 2010 Series: Class 3 Notes

    Hello!
What did we do in Class 3?

We started with a gentle yoga flow warm up... followed by a break down of the sections in an undulation.

There are a few ways to feel the undulation. You can start with a big bodywave, with your whole entire head, shoulders, and torso moving through air. This is a skeletal movement. Then slowly restrict the head as if you were balancing something. Then restrict the shoulders as if it was locked in place. The end result is an undulation using just the muscles.

Then we segment each part of the undulation.
Practice: chest lift (upper back), down (upper abs); pelvic lock front (lower abs), back (release)... repeatedly.

Then, go back to a smooth undulation.

To continue with the choreography, we add "hip drops". With the right foot on the ball, twist the right hip up, and accent down. Keep this movement loose, but remember the accent is on the down of the hip. Also, make sure the back leg is strong and with a slightly bent knee so that it can absorb height change. For this choreography, I'd like to keep the body bounce out of the movement.

Then we have a body lock combination of the chest up, down (for counts 1+), pelvic lock front, back (for counts 2+), chest lift (count 3). Then undulate down starting from the upper abs, starting on count 4.

Finally, flip the hip drops so that they are hip pops or hip lifts up, rhythmically accenting the up motion. This is essentially the "Hip Bump" in the American Tribal Style repretoire.

    See you Thursday!

    TFBD May-June 2010 Series: Class 2 Notes

    Hello Dancers!
Sorry the Class 2 notes are so late in the making...

    1. Warmup using review of the movements covered in Class 1.
    2. Washer Woman. Start with arms in modified 4th position (left arm up, right arm in in front curved). Right foot on the ball. Right hip twists up, back, then forward and down; so there is 3 distinct motions. Switch to the other side with the other arm framing.
    3. Figure 8 up to down (aka "Maya"), but with accent on the down. Lift the right hip up, slide the out, accent down, then pull the hip back into neutral. Lift the left hip up, slide the hip out, accent down, then pull the hip back into neutral. Remember to keep the back flat, slight bend in the knees. To get a sharp accent down, give quick glute contraction on the opposite hip.
    4. Washer Woman and Figure 8 up to down combo. Perform the right side of the Washer Woman, followed by Figure 8 up to down starting on the right, then left. Then switch over to the left side of the Washer Woman, followed by Figure 8 up to down starting on the left, then right.

    Enjoy!

    TFBD May-June 2010 Series: Class 1 Notes

    Hello Dancers!

Thank you for a spectacular start of this new session. I'm really excited to be working with you on hip articulations, standard dance technique, and arabic rhythms!

    Here's a recap:

    1. Yoga and Pilates Warm up

    2. Hip Twists. Then add the feet. Experiment with when the feet is flat or on the ball; walking forward or stepping in place.

For this choreography we will step right and twist the right hip forward; place right foot flat in place. Then place the ball of the left foot in front of right foot and twist the left hip forward, including a slight torso rotation to the right side. Then place the left foot down in front. You'll end up traveling with this movement, which is essentially the "Basic Egyptian in American Tribal Style (ATS) repretoire movement" but with a slight modification in the footwork and adding the torso rotation. I learned this from the Black Sheep Belly Dance group who named this the "Budding Flower".

    3. Hip Singles. Experiment with the timing, and footwork. Try with both feet flat, walking or in place. Try with both feet on the ball, walking or in place. Then try with one foot flat and the other on ball, in place or traveling side ways towards the side that the foot is on the ball.

For the choreography, we use the hip singles with left foot flat and right foot on the ball, traveling in a circular floor pattern to the right. This particular movement in the ATS vocabulary is called a "Choo Choo" or "Hip Bump".

    4. Shoulder shimmy. Gentle press of the shoulder forward and back. Keep the shoulders relaxed and the neck long. Maintain a smooth motion, smaller the better!

As you've noticed, we have quite a bit of "vocabulary" going on here. Remember that belly dance is traditionally a folk dance passed down and learned in family gatherings. In the West, we've attempted to put terminology to movements. I use the Suhaila Salimpour Format terminology quite a bit in my classes because I believe they refer to the specific movement relative to the body. I also like to mention the terminology used in the American Tribal Style because that is also a well-established format. In general, there are the basics... a hip twist is a hip twist, a figure 8 is a figure8, etc. But just know there are different ways to execute a movement, to add texture, and to create variety. The more open you are and the more you learn, the more options you will give yourself when you dance!

See you on Thursday, May 27th!

TFBD May-June series starts this Thursday!

    Hello!

I just got back from Tribal Fest 10 in California. Every year for the past 10 years, the artsy quaint town of Sebastopol hosts a myriad of fusion dancers from all over the world. It's a crazy and fun festival where anything goes! There are varying styles within the "tribal" genre and dancers of all levels. I had a great time meeting some new dancers and catching up with old friends.

I've have some new twists on old ATS movements and ideas for you... are you ready?!

For the TFBD May-June series, we'll be working with a drum solo called "Kholkhal Taheyya" from the album "Sabla Tolo" by Hossam Ramzy. You can find this music on iTunes or Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WIIKF2/ref=sr_1_album_1_rd?ie=UTF8&child=B000WIIJZS&qid=1274205179&sr=1-1

Have a listen before class... and get ready to dance!

Your left hip will now be forward. Bend the left knee and drop the left hip forward, lift the left hip up and in towards the body as you lift your left heel; while still making contact with the floor with your left big toe, slide the leg back as you drop your left hip back. Now your right hip will be forward. The arms are open and parallel to the floor; the shoulder roll forward, up, and back, mimicking the motion of the hips (same side shoulder as the hips).

As promised, here is the video of the rest of the choreography.

I'm off to Tribal Fest in May. I'll be coming back with lots of new ideas for us to play with.

The next session starts May 20. We'll be covering Arabic rhythms and dancing a new drum piece! Registration is here: http://www.lilybellydance.com/registerMay.shtml

    Hope to see you soon!

    TFBD Mar-Apr 2010 Series: Class 5 Notes

A couple of new movements were introduced in Class 5:
    ATS Propeller Turn:
Start with both arms overhead. Drop the right arm to shoulder height, with hand floreos, and raise it again. Then do the same with the left arm. Drop the right arm again to shoulder height, and cue the turn with a slight raise of the wrist. Cross your right foot over your left and pivot in place, dropping the right arm and crossing your arms at chest level as you turn to the back. As you come around to the front again, end with the right foot in front of the left and pull the arms apart to create a dramatic pose (right arm behind your ear, left arm in front). Body faces left diagonal.

    Lateral Body Wave:
Not an ATS movement, but a fusion movement. Starting in dance posture, step the right foot out just past hip distance, while sliding and tilting the right shoulder down and to the right. Then, lift just the heel of the left foot. Press the ball of the left foot into the ground as you pull the left hip in towards you. Slowly control the lift of the heel until the toe of the left foot lifts off the ground. Bring the left foot into center and realign just for a split second before the left foot steps out to the left to start the wave towards the left. You can think of this movement as if you were kelp in the calm sea. Deeply rooted in the ground, yet you can still move with the slow and smooth oceanic current. I hope that is a good visual for you!

    Choo Choo Shimmy:
These are essentially double-time hip singles done on demipointe (super fast hip shimmies done on the ball of the feet). Start in dance posture and come onto releve. As you step on the right ball of the foot, the right hip lifts; as you step on the left ball of the foot, the left hip lefts. Continuing alternating and walking... Once comfortable, then speed up. Remember to keep the knees bent and pelvic neutral. There should not be any bounce or height change. Keep the feet movement small and not noticeable (or audible!).

Practice these at home... Remember that our next class (and last one of the series) is April 29!

    No class on April 22!
It's Earth Day, and I will be in Toronto for the International Belly Dance Conference of Canada.

Don't forget to sign up for the next series:
    May 20 - June 24 (6-weeks)

    Happy Dancing!

    TFBD Mar-Apr 2010 Series: Class 4 Notes

In this fourth class of the series, we covered 3 movements:
    1. (ATS) Camel Walk - Step with the right foot onto the balls of the feet as you press down with the right hand and raise the left hand overhead. Keeping all your weight on the right foot, bend your right knee and extend the left foot to the side. Right arm goes up and left hand reaches toward extended left foot. Straighten your right leg as you draw the left foot in, and layer an arm undulation over a small torso rotation to bring you back to center. For long lengths of time, manage your arm movement so that the hands flow gradually to their full extension.

    2. (ATS) Turkish Shimmy - also known as "Arabic 4" - Facing forward, step the right foot in front of the left; at the same time arms swing over to the right side (This is count 1). Left foot steps in place on count 2. Right foot steps back to starting position as arms swing over to the left side (This is count 3). Left foot steps in place on count 4. Note that although arms are moving horizontally, keep the torso open.

    3. "Cross touch circles" - Alternating interior chest circles, starting down & clockwise; with (feet) cross touch, starting right foot.

    We also reviewed the choreography...
    Looking forward to Class 5!

    TFBD Mar-Apr 2010 Series: Class 2 Notes

I know what you're wondering... Where are the Class 2 notes? I apologize these are so late in arriving on the blog, but just in time before Class 3. So, it's a good thing you checked before going to class, right?

    Here's a recap of Class 2...

We warmed up with some double-time singles (in the Suhaila Salimour terminology) or also known as the choo-choo shimmy (not to be confused with the ATS Choo Choo step!).

Jumana Points at the ribcage to warm up the upper body. Imagine the asterisk sign on the floor and slide your chest towards each point on the asterisk sign. This is a good exercise to help increase your range of motion. Try this also at the hips!

    Practice the hip squares alternating:
    - front, right, back, left;
    - front left, back, right;
    - front.
That's 5 counts total. Practice starting at a slow speed, then build up to as fast as you can. We're going to use this in the next class.

It's all going to come together in Class 3. So, come prepared!

I know I mentioned putting up a little video, but I'm going to save it for Class 3 as it will be our half way mark.

    See you Thursday!

Kami Liddle's Incredible Tribal Fusion Solo

Having seen Kami Liddle's performance at 3rd Coast Tribal in January, I wanted to share her talents here on the blog.

I once heard someone said you couldn't smile in a tribal style performance. Here is Kami proving them wrong! Her smile is sweet, inviting, and mischievious at times! So, put on a grin, show us some teeth... charm the pants off of us...

    TFBD Mar-Apr 2010 Series: Class 1 Notes

    Greetings Dancers!
Thanks you for a great first class of this new session. With a mixed-level class, we will always have some review to do. It is a great time to check in on your foundation, posture, and technique. For those who are just starting their journey in bellydance, welcome! I hope you'll find what you're looking for in these classes and also continue on to learn more... because there is always more to learn!

In our first class, we started with a mild warm-up, checked our posture, reviewed our arm positions and went right into the hips. With this session offering basic belly dance techniques and American Tribal Style (ATS) movements, I try to use an expanded vocabulary when talking about these movements. For the basic belly dance technique, I tend to use the vocabulary from the "Suhaila Salimpour Format" and when referring to ATS movements, I use the ATS vocabulary.

Here is a general breakdown of what we did:

    • Hip Singles

      • hip singles with down beat on the right (right hip up on the down beat)
      • hip singles with down beat on the left (left hip up on the down beat)
      • With body turned to face the left diagonal, hip singles with down beat on the left. (These look like drops)
      • With body turned to face the left diagonal, hip singles with down beat on the right. (These look like "bumps")These are also known as "Hip Bumps" in the ATS vocabulary.
      • With body turned to face the right diagonal, hip singles with down beat on the right. (These look like drops)
      • With body turned to face the right diagonal, hip singles with down beat on the left. (These look like "bumps")
We add flamenco arms to the hip singles down beat on the right with body turned to face the left diagonal while traveling forward and get the ATS Choo Choo.

ATS Choo Choo - Starting with the hip singles down beat on the right with body turn to face the left diagonal position and traveling forward, every time your right hip is up, your weight is on the right foot in releve. When your right hip is down, your weight is on the left foot. By transferring the weight between your feet you can shuffle your feet towards the right.

Adding arms and a turn, we get the ATS Choo Choo Arc Turn (also known simply as the Arc Turn).

ATS Choo Choo Arc Turn - An 8 count movement in total. Choo-choo to the front 2 counts, then bring left arm down to meet right arm in front 2 counts. Slightly raising both wrists, then for the next 4 counts, pivot around to the left, bringing both hands to the left hip as you turn to the back. Sweep arms around and overhead to complete, ending with arms in starting position. Land back on the starting position on the next count 1.

For our class, we're going to use the ATS Choo Choo Arc Turn with a slightly different counting, adjusting to the music we're dancing to.

modified ATS Choo Choo Arc Turn - An 8 count movement in total. Choo-choo to the front 4 counts, then bring left arm down to meet right arm in front 2 counts. Slightly raising both wrists, then for the next 2 counts, pivot around to the left, bringing both hands to the left hip as you turn to the back. Sweep arms around and overhead to complete, ending with arms in starting position. Land back on the starting position on the next count 1.

Lastly, we have some hip lock combinations. Use gentle muscle contractions to create a sharp quality to the hip singles for the hip locks right and left. Be sure to release the muscle contraction in order to continue and be back at center for the next movement.

We then add in pelvic locks front and back. For pelvic lock front, use the lower abdominal muscles. For pelvic lock back, use the lower back muscles.

So, the entire hip lock combination is: right, left, front, back. Very quickly!

By adding punctuated hips and arms, we create what we're calling the "Double-Down Combo" to be used in the choreography:

    • Double-Down Combo

      • Slowly lift arms to flamenco position. Facing right corner, left hip double-down on count 4.
      • Facing center, right hip on count 5 + left hip on count 6 + pelvic lock front on count 7 + pelvic lock back on count 8.
      • Slowly lift arms to flamenco position. Facing left corner, right hip double-down on count 4.
      • Facing center, right hip on count 5 + left hip on count 6 + pelvic lock front on count 7 + pelvic lock back on count 8.

The music we're dancing to is called "1000 Eyes", from the album "Satya" by Solace. You can find it on iTunes!

    See you all next week!
