TFBD May-June 2010 Series: Class 5 Notes

Class 5 was full of shimmies!

As we had talked about in class, there are different types of shimmies... then there is your default shimmy. Do a little exploration with changing your stance, feet wider or closer, weight distributed forward, center, or back, etc. Does the movement come from your hips or your legs? If legs, what part of the leg: knee or quadricep? Perhaps the movement can come from both hips and legs? Give it a try! Then vary the intensity... loose the swingy, soft and little, then big and strong!

For practice, start with dance posture and put the shimmies on "auto-pilot". Then add hip slides and other movements.

What we added to the choreography:

  • Shimmy with hip slides. 16 counts.

    • Shimmy with hip slide right (count 1), left (count 2), right (count 3), left (count 4), right (count 5), left (count 6); interior hip circle (counts 7,8). Repeat.

  • 3/4 shimmy, walking. 32 counts.

    • Place right foot at right diagonal, step left foot in place, right foot at left diagonal, step left foot in place, right foot at back left diagonal, step left foot in place, step right foot at back right diagonal, step left foot in place.
    • Walk forward for 8 counts.
    • Walk backwards for 4 counts.
    • Face the right diagonal using the last 4 counts.

  • Shimmy with undulations. 16 counts.

    • On the "and", start with shoulder roll forward so that on count 1, the shoulders draw back while the chest lifts up to start the undulations.
    • Start the next undulations on counts 3, 5, 7.
    • Pivot to the left diagonal to start again, from the shoulder roll.

Spaces are still available for the next series, starting July 8. Registration is available here: http://www.lilybellydance.com/instruction/index.shtml

The next series will focus on slow, flowy, ooey-gooey movements... Let's go serpentine!
