TFBD May-June 2010 Series: Class 3 Notes

Hello!
What did we do in Class 3?

We started with a gentle yoga flow warm up... followed by a break down of the sections in an undulation.

There are a few ways to feel the undulation. You can start with a big bodywave, with your whole entire head, shoulders, and torso moving through air. This is a skeletal movement. Then slowly restrict the head as if you were balancing something. Then restrict the shoulders as if it was locked in place. The end result is an undulation using just the muscles.

Then we segment each part of the undulation.
Practice: chest lift (upper back), down (upper abs); pelvic lock front (lower abs), back (release)... repeatedly.

Then, go back to a smooth undulation.

To continue with the choreography, we add "hip drops". With the right foot on the ball, twist the right hip up, and accent down. Keep this movement loose, but remember the accent is on the down of the hip. Also, make sure the back leg is strong and with a slightly bent knee so that it can absorb height change. For this choreography, I'd like to keep the body bounce out of the movement.

Then we have a body lock combination of the chest up, down (for counts 1+), pelvic lock front, back (for counts 2+), chest lift (count 3). Then undulate down starting from the upper abs, starting on count 4.

Finally, flip the hip drops so that they are hip pops or hip lifts up, rhythmically accenting the up motion. This is essentially the "Hip Bump" in the American Tribal Style repretoire.

See you Thursday!
