Tribal Fusion Class 7 Notes

I'm not sure if you can tell, but you have really improved! I see the progression... I hope you can too.

Here are the notes from Thursday. Sorry, they're arriving a day late.

1. A quick run through of the "Heretic" choreography.
2. Warm up, tone, and prep.
3. Shimmies - starting slow with one hip up, then alternating. Double the speed. Then speed up as fast as you can go. Remember to keep knees slightly bent and pelvis neutral.
4. Shimmies in the Jumana points (asterics star).
5. Interior hip circles - going clockwise, starting in the front. Think about pulling each side of the hip inward and to keep the movement smooth.
6. Finishing off the choreography:
1. Enter with snake arms. Add 8 counts of shimmy before starting the Basic Egyptian.
2. Basic Egyptian - 16 counts
3. Egyptian half turns (turning over left shoulder) - 16 counts
4. Torso rotations (4) - 32 counts
5. Arabic, traveling right - 8 counts
6. Reverse figure 8 (mayas) - 8 counts
7. Arabic, traveling left - 8 counts
8. Reverse figure 8 - 8 counts
9. Forward stance, arms extending forward for 4 counts, then draw back for 4 counts - 8 counts
10. Chest locks combo: chest down-up-down, right shoulder forward, then back. Repeat. - 8 counts
11. Torso turn to the right - 8 counts
12. Body wave (one foot in front of the other)- 12 counts
13. Torso turn to the left (to face front) - 4 counts
14. Snake arms with level change - 24 counts
15. Camel Walk - 24 counts
16. Arabic, traveling right - 8 counts
17. Arabic twist - 8 counts
18. Arabic, traveing left - 8 counts
19. Arabic twist - 8 counts
20. Lale, start right, (pivot to face back wall) left, right, (pivot to face front) left - 32 counts
21. Choo Choo Pivot Turn - 32 counts
start first set in the forward direction, then front left corner, then front right corner, then front center again.
22. Slow drawn out pose of the arms - left arm up, right arm down - 8 counts.
23. Vertical Barrel turn - right foot crosses over the left, turn over the left shoulder; right arm and left arm crosses in the back - 8 counts. Turn on count 1, then ease your body in to position for the rest of the counts.
24. Shimmy in place with tiny arm undulations - 16 counts
25. Interior hip circle - 2 counts.
26. Crossover turn - right foot crosses over the left, turn over the left shoulder. Similar to the Vertical Barrel turn except without the placement of the arms.
27. Pose in the "flamenco" stance to finish.

Thanks for a great class.
Have a sunny and windblown day!

Tribal Fusion Class 6 Notes

Hi Ladies!
Great class last night. I hope you enjoyed dancing with each other!

Here is a recap of class:
1. Lale (a.k.a. "swimmer". Pronounced "lah-lay") - This is a unique movement to me. My dance partner in London and I had developed it back in 2006.
  • Starting with a stance slightly wider than hip width apart, left toes point forward, right toes point right, reach with the right arm slowly and gracefully towards the right, keeping your hips in the same place, chest faces forward, top of head reaches to the right. 4 counts.
  • Pivot the hips and torso so that the chest faces the floor as the left arm sweeps in a straight line along side the body towards the right wall. 2 counts.
  • Dragging the left foot towards the right foot (weight on right), lift the torso to vertical, pushing the arms down so that hands are next to hips. 2 counts.
  • Repeat the left side.

2. Add travel to Arabics.

Here is the updated choreography to Heretic:

1. Enter with snake arms. Add 8 counts of shimmy before starting the Basic Egyptian.

5. Arabic, traveling right - 8 counts

6. Reverse figure 8 (mayas) - 8 counts

7. Arabic, traveling left - 8 counts

8. Reverse figure 8 - 8 counts

9. Forward stance, arms extending forward for 4 counts, then draw back for 4 counts - 8 counts

10. Chest locks combo: chest down-up-down, right shoulder forward, then back. Repeat. - 8 counts

11. Torso turn to the right - 8 counts

12. Body wave (one foot in front of the other)- 12 counts

:: Announcements ::

1.) For those interested in the March/April (5 week session) $60, the registration form is up:

http://www.lilybellydance.com/register.shtml

For this 5 weeks, we will focus on fast movements and pair the movements to a rythmic drum piece of music ("drum solo").

2.) At the end of summer or fall, there will be some dance opportunities for those in my classes interested in performing either as a small group or with me. I am working on a project with a few other dance teachers who are planning to organize a stage show. Let me know if you have the desire to perform!

Lastly, Caitlin asked about this jacket I had worn a few weeks ago. It is from http://www.lululemon.com. They have a store here in Austin at 6th and Lamar, next to Amy's Ice Cream. The store sells yoga inspired athletic clothing.

Have a great weekend!

Tribal Fusion Bellydance Class 5 Notes

Hi ladies,
Here are the notes for class 5 ...

1. Review!

2. (ATS) Camel Walk - Step with the right foot onto the balls of the feet as you press down with the right hand and raise the left hand overhead. Keeping all your weight on the right foot, bend your right knee and extend the left foot to the side. Right arm goes up and left hand reaches toward extended left foot. Straighten your right leg as you draw the left foot in, and layer an arm undulation over a small torso rotation to bring you back to center. For long lengths of time, manage your arm movement so that the hands flow gradually to their full extension.

3. Torso turn - Using the torso rotation starting right, with the initial momentum of the rotation, turn (we will use quarter turns in class) to the right by putting all your weight on the right foot and let the left foot drag behind then placed next to the right foot.

4. Level chages - Many steps can be combined with a level change, which simply means you bend your knees to lower yourself and then come back up. The slower and smoother you go, the better! For the choreography, we are pairing snake arms with a level change.

Here is the updated choreography to Heretic:
1. Enter with snake arms
2. Basic Egyptian - 16 counts
3. Egyptian half turns (turning over left shoulder) - 16 counts
4. Torso rotations (4) - 32 counts
5. Arabic - 8 counts
6. Reverse figure 8 - 8 counts
7. Arabic (turning over right shoulder) - 8 counts
8. Reverse figure 8 - 8 counts
9. Forward stance - 8 counts
16. Arabic - 8 counts
17. Arabic twist - 8 counts
18. Arabic - 8 counts
19. Arabic twist - 8 counts

We have 3 more class left together to finish the choreography!
Have a super duper Valentine's weekend!

Tribal Fusion Bellydance Class 4 Notes

Hey! We are half way through the session. What do you think so far?

Here are the Class 4 notes:

1. Review basic movements, Jumana points at the hip, hip articulation.

2. Jumana points with chest.

3. Chest
  • locks up and down
  • slides side to side
  • tilts side to side
  • exterior circle
  • interior circle, chest omi or "chomi"

4. Shoulder locks

  • forward and back
  • shoulder shimmy
  • up and down
  • box

5. Upper body combo: chest locks up(1) and down(2), right shoulder forward (3) and back (4)

6. Hip shimmy

7. Body wave (I called this a layback in class. Sorry.) - Start by pushing the chest up and forward, then lean back and roll the movement down the spine. There are varying degrees of body waves. Start small and work towards a bigger movement. Be sure to keep the tailbone tucked and engage your abdominal muscles. Knees are bent.

Arms should frame the upper body and face. The arms can accentuate the movement. At start, arms are extended forward, as chest lifts up and forward, draw hands inwards towards the body. As you lean back, push arms away from body. Cycle through as continuous movement.

The body wave is a stationary upper body movement.

Have a great weekend!
